Chopsticks with an acrylic coating- are they decorative or food safe?

My husband brought home some chopsticks from Japan. One set was ornately painted and finished in a polyurethane coating. The other set is painted and has an acrylic coating which has a painty odor. Are either one of these safe to eat with?

RON HERE... Well I wouldn't worry too much about it but any substance can wear of a bit with use especially the hotter it is.
