How do I preserve my wooden slice I used for my wedding cake stand?

Hello there , my daughters getting in October, and wants a wooden slice as her wedding cake stand, afterwards she would like to have it as a keepsake and use it as a cheeseboard, how can we protect the tree slice, and use it with food without poisoning anyone.
