How much should we be selling our Arbutus wood for?

dead arbutus wood

Hi Ron,

We recently had to cut down an old dead arbutus tree that was threatening to fall on our house with the next windstorm. It was an old tree, and once we cut it down we realized that it's pretty hard (not rotting at all) and probably could have stayed up if not for all the high branches...

Anyway, we feel that it might be worth something and we can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone about what we should sell it for. I suspect people want to charge us to take it away but the wood might be worth a few thousand dollars. I am uploading a photo of it. Can you give us an idea of what we should charge for it? It doesn't have to be exact of course, just an idea.

Thank you!

M

Value of Arbutus Wood
by: Arbutus Ron

Arbutus wood is not all created equally!

I have 5 grades of the finished products I make, and mostly it is the quality of the grain that determines its value.

Some pieces are very rare and hard to find. Some are very common, and some may be cracked.

Often a dead standing tree will have many small cracks in it. I suspect yours does too and may even have some wood quite deteriorated, although hard to tell from the photo.

I would have to say if you can find a buyer you may get a few hundred dollars at most, but that may be unlikely.

Let me know what you get for it.

Arbutus Ron
