Natural Walnut Oil versus Roasted Walnut Oil

Hello,

I bought a krautpounder that helps pack cabbage into mason jars for making sauerkraut. The folks I bought it from recommend walnut oil. I can only find roasted walnut oil, but am hesitant to use it as I'm afraid it will have too strong a smell and might turn rancid sooner.

Do you know if roasted or plain natural is preferred? If natural, plain walnut oil is the best, where do I find it? I live in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Thank you for your time.

Claudia

P.S. Have you tried coconut oil vs. walnut oil? I can find it locally.

Arbutus Ron here:

I prefer unroasted walnut oil available at health food stores. Mineral oil is another alternative if you don't mind a petroleum based product. Some people also like coconut oil.

Whichever one you use, it is not the end of the world as it will need to be reapplied from time to time, so you can change your mind if you want to try another one.
