Black leaves on part of Madrone tree

We have a Madrona Tree that is black on one side (West side) of the tree. The other branches are fine so far.

While traveling to church (11 Miles away)we notice other Madrona Trees that are doing the same thing. Some trees have totally gone black. We have not noticed this before. Is this normal?

Arbutus Ron here:

Sadly it is a disease that will slowly kill the tree.

Sometimes a tree branch can die off and turn grey, not black. It does this because of a lack of water usually or sunlight.

But what you are describing is a disease. Perhaps an arborist would know if there is any way of saving the trees.
