Staining wooden knife handles

Hi, it was great learning from your website. I'm thinking of staining my wooden knife handles. Can I apply any kind of wood stain and coat it with beeswax or shellac so that it would stand up to hand-washing with soapy water and remain food-safe? I'm very new to this so any additional tips would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Ron here...

I guess it depends on how food safe you want to be... if it is a natural stain that you would it, then fine. But if not natural, then you may get some residues... so you decide!
