Two Pieces of Madrona Wood Wanted for Signs

by Bob
(WA)

I want to make 2 (two) signs for some friends of mine who live on San Juan Island. I would like to use Madrona wood. Is it possible to get 2 (two) pieces that are 12"X 18"X 1/2"? They do not need to be perfectly square, in fact, rounded corners are preferable.

Tricky to dry Madrona Wood
by: Arbutus Ron

Hi Bob,

Thanks for writing...that sized board is not possible for me and I don't make anything rectangular! The width is too wide as well. And flat and dry in Madrona, now that's a trick!

Perhaps a small mill locally could try and perhaps have some success with a kiln.

Good luck,

Ron

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the quick response. I suspected I was asking way too much from a Madrona tree. But I thought it was worth a shot to ask an expert. Your web site mentions flooring possibilities with Madrona. I only need 3 to 4 square feet for both signs which I could then piece together and laminate to a backing to make my signs. Any possibilities there?

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Your best bet would be to get a chunk of a branch or Madrone tree, mill it yourself, let it dry and take it from there. I don't have anything to laminate as that would be flat and rectangular.

Good luck!

Ron

ps. I am going to post this series on the website under questions. Perhaps someone nearby can offer you other ideas.
